    Alex Shibutani Facts

  • His parents met as Harvard musicians.
  • He started skating at the age of 7.
  • The Shibutanis first teamed up to compete in an ice dancing competition during the spring of 2004. At that time, their singles coach Kathy Bird arranged for them so they could work with their first dancing coaches Andy Stroukoff and Susie Kelley.
  • During the 2004-2005 season which also appeared to be their first season of competition, the Shibutanis competed on the juvenile level, the lowest level in the U.S. Figure Skating testing structure.
  • As of December 2019, they are two-time members of the US Olympic team, competing at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
  • In 2018, the Shibutanis became the first ice dancers who are of Asian descent to win a medal at the Olympics. They turned out to be the 2nd sibling to ever share an ice dancing Olympic medal and the first to do so from the United States.
  • The Shibutanis made their junior international debut at 2008-09 ISU Junior Grand Prix event held in Courchevel, France, where they finished 2nd in the compulsory dance and eventually won the original and free dances, winning the gold medal overall after obtaining a winning margin of 11 points over silver medalists Kharis Ralph and Asher Hill.
  • They didn’t compete in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. The last competition they attended before they went on a hiatus was the 2018 U.S. Figure Skating Championships during which they placed first in the short dance and 3rd in the free dance, finishing at 2nd place overall behind Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue.
  • Alex and Maia also attended the Winter Olympics 2018 where they performed both the short and free dance in the team figure skating event, helping Team USA to win the bronze medal. They have added their final sets of victories in a match against Hubbell and Donohue. Overall, the siblings received a short dance score of 77.73, a free dance score of 114.86, and a total tally of 192.59.
  • The Shibutanis created their YouTube channel called ShibSibs on May 17, 2012. The channel has already amassed more than 180k subscribers with more than 15 million combined views.
