A detective investigating former mixed martial arts fighter War Machine’s grisly attack on his ex-porn star girlfriend says she was too battered after to give her account.
Las Vegas detective Daniel Tomaino, who testified Friday during War Machine’s attempted murder and sexual assault trial, said that he went to Christine Mackinday’s hospital bedside to get her statement after the August 2014 attack.
“I just couldn’t understand what she was saying but it was because she didn’t have teeth,” Tomaino said at the Las Vegas trial.
Mackinday, also known as Christy Mack, said she suffered a broken nose, lost and broken teeth, a damaged liver, broken bones in her face and a fractured rib. In her testimony on Thursday, the 25-year-old said that she had to undergo cosmetic surgery to fix her teeth and nose.
Mackinday said she had been involved with War Machine, 35, whose name was legally changed from Jonathan Koppenhaver, in an often abusive relationship for 15 months.
While Tomaino was on the stand, horrific images were shown on a screen of Mackinday severely bruised lying in a hospital bed.
“She still was in a state where [the physicians] were trying to figure out what exactly her problems were,” Tomaino said.
Tomaino was able to interview Mackinday’s friend, Corey Thomas, who was in the neighboring hospital room after also being attacked by the ex-fighter at her Las Vegas home.
Earlier on Friday, detective Jessica Acevedo testified that DNA evidence found in Mackinday’s home matched Koppenhaver.
Koppenhaver faces charges on 34 counts, including attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual assault. He has has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
