Frasier star Kelsey Grammer is spinning story ideas for future episodes of the reboot, including roping back in Succession alum Brian Cox. In a recent interview, Grammer expressed his desire to bring back Cox, a former guest star on Frasier, for the Paramount+ reboot.
“I ran into Brian Cox the other night at the Emmys. Brian Cox is his [Keith’s character David Crane] grandfather in [the Frasier episode] ‘Story Land.’ And I think it would be great to have him back and take you on a bender,” Grammer told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s gonna shake some old Moon character into this kid.”
Cox made a guest appearance as Harry Moon, the hard-drinking father of Daphne (played by Jane Leeves), in the 23rd and 24th episodes of the ninth season of the original Frasier series. In a well-intentioned move, Niles (played by David Hyde Pierce) brings together Daphne’s estranged parents, Harry and Gertrude (played by Millicent Martin), but as is often the case in the Frasier universe, the reunion doesn’t go according to plan.
On Frasier on Paramount+, David, the son of Niles and Daphne, enrolls at Harvard, where Frasier has obtained a professorship. Frasier arrives in town with the intention of reconnecting with his own son Freddy (Cutmore-Scott).
Brian Cox Wouldn’t Be the Only ‘Frasier’ Guest Star Returning for Kelsey Grammer’s Reboot
Of course, Brian Cox returning for Frasier isn’t the only suggestion Kelsey Grammer has had in recent months. In interviews, Grammer has suggested that he’d like to see Dr. Crane’s first flame, Cheers‘ Diane Chambers, make an appearance. Shelley Long, the actress who portrayed Diane on Cheers appeared on the original Frasier. However, she was absent from the recent Cheers reunion at the 2024 Emmys.
However, characters from Frasier’s past series have already visited the recent reboot. In the reboot’s Christmas episode, Peri Gilpin returned as Roz, a cornerstone of Dr. Crane’s days in Seattle. For all 11 seasons of the original sitcom, which aired from 1993 to 2004, Gilpin portrayed Roz Doyle, the producer of Frasier’s radio show.
Gilpin’s Roz isn’t the only old pal to join the Frasier reboot in Boston. Recently, his former flame Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) also returned for Freddy’s birthday. After some hijinks, Frasier and Lilith decided to celebrate special occasions separately.
The Frasier reboot is currently streaming on Paramount+. There’s no word if there will be a followup season.
